Habits are so hard to change due to different factors. One reason why is due to the strong wiring that happens in the brain. Once you have become so used to do something, breaking that habit, or unlearning to do something that's counterproductive to what you want takes planning, process, desire, and commitment. Another reason why it is so hard to change habits is because as human beings, we have a tendency to struggle with failure. Unfortunately, when you are learning to change behavior, failure is important. That is part of the learning. As a coach, we can maximize the chances of success for our coachee if we acknowledge that the process with be difficult and how we typically respond to change. Also, by helping them cultivate and bring forward what they really want and using great questioning to break their BHAG into smaller sub-goals and specific, reasonable actions to get them moving forward. Also, continuing to be that cheerleader and accountability partner with them and helping them celebrate the even smallest of successes can increase the liklihood of habit change.
